Focus Schools

Background and Purpose:

The American Indian Focus Schools Program is a partnership between the Denver Public Schools (DPS) and the American Indian community for the purpose of improving the education of all children.  The program centralizes the enrollment of American Indian students in two high schools, one middle school, and three elementary schools.  In centralizing the enrollment, the program:

  • decreases students feelings of isolation;
  • increases parental involvement;
  • increases the feeling of student ownership in the educational process;
  • increases achievement and literacy levels;
  • improves the delivery of services for students.

Not all Focus Schools are at capactiy.  If you wish to transfer your child to an American Indian Focus School, please submit your application as soon as possible.  Students are eligible to transfer.

The Focus Schools for school year 2005 - 2006 are:

 East High School
 Career Education Center (CEC) Middle College of Denver
 Merrill Middle School
 Brown Elementary
 College View Elementary
 Wyman Elementary

Some American Indian students in the Denver Public Schools are experiencing success in their home school or magnet school.  Other American Indian students benefit from the concentration of support and services at the Focus Schools.  If you have an interest in learning more about the program or need enrollment information, please contact the Indian Education Program Office.  If your are interested in enrolling your child(ren) in one of the Focus Schools, please print the Focus School Application and mail or fax it to the Indian Education Program Office, in care of Linda Montour.
